The Challenge:

Brand plates demand emotional clarity,

but that clarity is hard to achieve

Classico: The situation

  • Classico had historically been a premium pasta sauce with stable brand share. As a result of cost-out projects, price increases and the emergence of “super premium” brands like Rao’s, Classico was facing declining share and trades in the low-loyalty “messy middle” of the category at #5 position.
  • While Classico used to have strength in key attributes like ‘tastes homemade’, ‘made with quality ingredients’, and ‘best tasting’, Classico no longer clearly owned any of these and was not communicating a point of difference.
  • Facing the risk of distribution losses, the brand team needed this research to identify insights to help re-establish Classico’s role and position in the category today to halt the short-term share erosion and illuminate a path for long term growth of HH penetration and market share.

Protobrand's Approach

Metaphor Elicitation

Purpose: Explore symbolic, emotional territories

Respondent selects a visual metaphor, then describes the image by recording answers in their own voice. They then explain how the image captures how they think about the topic. AI Probing facilitates the conversation to enable further articulation.

Swipe

Purpose: Understand brand association & strength with key attributes

The respondent completes a swipe exercise measuring the strength of associations for a pre-defined list of brand attributes. Scores are calculated using answer frequency and speed of response; a fast swipe right indicates a stronger association.

This method allowed us to identify key opportunity areas for Classico’s positioning

  • ‘Time-Tested Authentic’ represented a key area of differentiation for Classico vs. other brands in the category
  • ‘Connection Curator’ was a key need in the category and represented an opportunity for clearer brand dominance

Marketing decisions fail
when the influence of consumers’ subconscious processing is ignored

The gap between what people say and what they do is infamous in market research, yet marketing practices often persist as if consumers were rational.

Behavioral science helps to deconstruct consumer irrationality, yielding real prediction power.
